SULLIVAN
Dermod* O'Sullivan ( -1549), of Dunboy Castle, Co. Cork; (eldest son of Donel O'Sullivan, whose lineage the Irish trace from Florence, King of Munster); m. Shela**, dau. of Donel McCarthy Reagh.
His second son (Sir) Owen, chosen as "O'Sullivan Beare" in the reign of Queen Elizabeth; m. Helena, dau. of James, Lord Barry.
* I have seen his name as Dermod, Dermot, and Dermond .. but most commonly Dermod.
** In almost every other account I have found Dermod's wife's name to be Julia McCarthy (or MacCarthy).
Dermod is reported to have blown himself up in 1549 in a gun-powder accident. True to Irish humor, they memorialized him with the nickname “Diarmuid a Phudair”, or Dermot of the Powder. He is sometimes referred to as Dermod, The Powdered.
DERMOD O'SULLIVAN, The Powdered, was the 11th Lord of Beare and Bantry, of Dunboy Castle.
He was born, lived, died and buried at Dunboy Castle, County Cork, Ireland.
